For a variety of reasons, one may find the need to add a side hustle to their full-time work. It may be a passion project they’ve always dreamed of doing or creating their own business on the side until it is financially profitable. Understandably adding more to one’s plate can lead to increased stress and overwhelm. Yet it is absolutely possible to maintain a healthy balance while still being successful in both. Below are three tips to consider using as you navigate or consider adding a side hustle to your life.
Tip 1: Get clear on the ideal time to work on the passion project and block out the time in your calendar.
Tip 2: Focus on a transition activity between the full-time job and the passion project. For example, if it is after work, going for a walk, cooking a meal, or reading will help to keep burnout at bay and refresh you for your second shift.
Tip 3: Communicate with family, friends, and other supportive people about this new schedule. Share why you’re doing it and your goals. If people do not know why this is important, they will most likely be less respectful of your time or not think twice before asking for a favor, etc. Lack of communication can lead to stress and resentment and your boundaries being infringed upon.
As with most things, it’s important to take regular stock and reflect on whether the side hustle or project is progressing you to your goals and whether managing the stress and added work is worthwhile. Working with a coach can bring added clarity, accountability, and support in navigating work/life balance as well. If you’d like to learn more, reach out to schedule a complimentary consult.
